Criminal and Civil Justice Intervention Services

Navigating the legal system can be overwhelming for survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence and human trafficking. Cornerstone can help.

Cornerstone’s Criminal and Civil Justice Intervention program staff can provide support and help guide a survivor through the process.

Court Accompaniment:
Cornerstone Advocates can accompany individuals to criminal court proceedings, family/civil court hearings and will help with safety planning, accessing necessary resources, and sharing information regarding the criminal and civil court process. There is no cost for these services.

Civil Justice Intervention:
Our Advocates will provide direct individual support for survivors, as they write and file Orders for Protection and Harassment Retraining Orders.

  • Who is eligible to obtain an Order for Protection?
If a family member, a person with whom you have a child in common, household member or someone with whom you had a romantic relationship has physically hurt you, or threatened to physically to hurt you or your children, you can ask the court for an Order for Protection (OFP).
  • How can an Order for Protection help me?
    • It can order your abuser not to harm you or others listed in the order, such as children, other family members or pets.
    • It can order your abuser to stay away from your home and areas specified in the order, such as your place of work, school, daycare or other locations.
    • It can order your abuser to not contact you in person, over the phone, by mail, email or electronic messaging, through a third party, or by any other means such as social media.
    • It will allow the police to arrest your abuser if he or she violates the order.
  • Who is eligible to obtain a Harassment Restraining Order?
A person who is a victim of harassment (Petitioner) may seek a restraining order from the Court. The parent or guardian of a minor who is the victim of harassment may seek a restraining order on behalf of the minor.
  • How can a Harassment Restraining Order help me?
    • It can order the harasser to stop the harassing behavior.
    • It can order the harasser to stay away from your home and areas specified in the order, such as your place of work, school, daycare or other locations.
    • It can order the harasser to not contact you in person, over the phone, by mail, email or electronic messaging, through a third party, or by any other means such as social media.
    • It will allow the police to arrest the harasser if he or she violates the order.

Criminal Justice Intervention:
In addition to supporting victims of abuse throughout the criminal justice process, we also facilitate partnerships within the criminal justice system. These partnerships are designed to increase the victims’ input in misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor cases and to increase the likelihood that a victim’s offender will be held accountable and their safety enhanced.
